A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition has reported that exercising before your first meal of the day is more effective than if you exercise after it.

The study volunteers went to the assessment centre on 3 separate occasions. On the first visit they did no exercise. On the second visit participants were asked to walk briskly for one hour before being provided with breakfast 30 minutes later, and on the final visit the participants walked after their breakfast.

Researchers assessed the effects of this activity and how this might affect fat and carbohydrate metabolism differently. They found that fat metabolism relative to carbohydrate metabolism was greater, and overall energy expenditure was greater when the participants exercised pre-breakfast compared with post-breakfast.

Dr Gill, who carried out the research at Glasgow University, said that while exercise in itself is good, any done before breakfast may be extra beneficial, because it forces the body to rely on its stores of fat for energy but the biggest difference is between doing nothing and doing something…

‘If you are going to do something, then there is a slight advantage in doing it in a fasted state. But if you find you keel over because you can’t do exercise before you have your slice of toast, then do it afterwards. You are still going to get a huge benefit.’
