Premier Dental Implant Practices of Chicago is on a mission: to provide the best dental implants solution for every patient. A visit to their newly launched website shows the difference: unlike the teeth-in-a-day dental clinics proliferating across the country, this group of 22 periodontists focuses on the ‘whole mouth experience’—preserving teeth whenever possible.

The reason is simple, says Premier’s Mark Rosen, DDS, drawing on more than 30 years of experience as a skilled periodontist: “As good as dental implants are, teeth were meant to last a lifetime.* We make every effort to first try and preserve good teeth, and thoughtfully recommend dental implants on an individual, as-needed basis.”

Periodontists, specialists who earn their credentials after years of special training in gum tissues and the underlying bone in the mouth, eschew the one size fits all approach to implant dentistry. “We founded Premier Dental Implant Specialists because we believe each patient deserves an individual treatment plan, customized to their specific needs, and not slotted into a specific protocol,” says David Barack, DDS. “The options available today are remarkable, giving us the ability to keep good teeth when possible, or replace the roots of a bad tooth with dental implants that are successful almost 100% of the time.”

Only periodontists, he adds, have the ability to offer everything needed to save teeth or replace them with dental implants, including periodontal surgery, preservation and maintenance of tissue health and sedation. “We are plastic surgeons of the mouth,” he says, “and we consider much more than just where to place dental implants, but also how it functions with the rest of your mouth and how it looks when you smile.”

Patients of Premier Dental Implant Practices benefit from a collaborative, big-picture approach to mouth care, according to Stephen Russo, DDS, MS. "We use a variety of treatment options, often including both tooth and implant-supported restorations in order to preserve existing teeth. And we collaborate with all members of the patient’s dental team—general dentist, root canal specialist, orthodontist, restorative dentist--to ensure the best possible outcome.”

For Skokie senior Lillian Kayton, replacing her missing teeth with dental implants was the best option, according to Premier’s Dr. Barack. “Lillian’s gum disease had progressed rapidly and multiple teeth had already fallen out. In Lillian’s case, dental implants were the best way to give her back a healthy lifestyle, restore her full chewing function and her beautiful smile,” says Barack. “It’s much more than a cosmetic fix, but can actually be lifesaving; research conclusively proves that people with their own teeth or well-placed implants live longer than those who are missing teeth.” Kayton’s initial concerns about potential complications and a painful procedure were completely eliminated after conferring with Dr. Barack. “He told me exactly what to expect, and assured me it would be painless and straightforward, and take a minimal amount of time,” she recalls. “He was right on all counts, and I’m so happy I did it. I can bite into an apple again, and am no longer embarrassed by a gummy smile.”

Perhaps the best accolade of all comes from Highland Park real estate agent Nancy Karp, who had been replacing a severely damaged tooth with a new cap every five years for the last three decades. The advanced technology and near-perfect success rate of dental implants finally convinced her to get the tooth extracted, and replaced with an implant. The surrounding gum was carefully preserved by the Premier dental implant specialist, and after the implant was fully healed a few months later, a crown was placed. Smiling broadly, Karp says: “It’s impossible to figure out which one is not the real tooth!”
