Finch Brands' contest, recognizing last week's Colorado and Washington votes on marijuana legalization, offers a unique prize pack for one winning designer.

Finch Brands - a boutique branding company located in Philadelphia, PA - launched a Marijuana Brand Design Contest this week. The contest, hosted on the company's Facebook page, was created to engage business and design communities around what could eventually become a huge opportunity for marketers. In a recent blog post, company president Bill Gullan discussed the sensitivities involved:

"Whatever one’s opinion, helping this category (and its users) take flight would be fascinating for business and brand builders – an undisturbed but massive landscape filled with opportunity and risk. There are very few such categories in American business – so we’ll be watching."

The company has called upon designers to submit realistic, would-be marijuana brand designs. Submissions can be ads, website renderings, package concepts or other "real" formats. Basic name, logo and tagline submissions will also be accepted, but the company said it looks forward to realistic concepts that show how the brands will appear in the real world.

Though this is a "real" design exercise, Finch Brands has maintained a playful ethos. "We realize that this is going be one of those contests that makes people stop and say, 'Is this really OK?'" said Frank Neill, Vice President of Business Development. "We think the prize pack puts those concerns to rest."

Neill is referencing the themed grand prize package that includes an assortment of munchies, a Cheech and Chong film and marijuana cookbooks. The prize also includes a $200 Visa gift card. The complete prize description is available on the contest site.

The Marijuana Brand Design Contest was introduced on Monday and will be accepting design submissions through December 3, 2012 at 5:00 PM, with voting to follow immediately and close on December 10, 2012 at 5:00 PM. The winner will be selected based on receiving the highest number of votes and will be announced on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 12:00 PM.

Complete contest rules, terms and conditions are posted at All participants must be at least 21 years old.
