Recently SongBird Survival received a substantial donation from the Nigel Vinson Trust. This is the same committed ornithologist who gave the founding donation to Martin Mere, the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Lancashire Reserve some 40 years ago.
He has done so because he knows that he is not alone in believing that a major underlying cause of the continuing decline in the songbird population in many areas is due to the failure to recognise the harm done by uncontrolled predation. This is because of the greatly increased numbers of many predators including magpies, crows, cats, foxes and other mammals. He considers the failure to recognise this confirms the view that in many instances intellectual integrity has been sacrificed for the sake of public perception.
He hopes that his donation will encourage others to support SongBird Survival as the lead charity prepared to undertake independent peer reviewed scientific research into songbird decline.
The Trustees of SongBird Survival decided to appoint a full time Director following the extremely generous help from Lord Vinson. After a very diligent search they are now announcing the appointment of Keith Cowieson to that position. He has recently retired after a very successful career in the RAF. He is also a keen and knowledgeable ornithologist and we are delighted he is joining us in early December.
