Lorna Kleidman, Three-Time Kettlebells Champion, Offers Weight Loss Advice for those Challenged by Obesity

Following the story of Shannon Chamberlain’s weight loss, Lorna Kleidman offers advice and motivation for those challenged by obesity, but comments that all weight loss must be done in a healthy manner.

On November 22, Lorna Kleidman, creator of the kettlebells exercise program KettleX, comments on an article published by Slate regarding the weight loss of Shannon Chamberlain. In response to the article, in which she recounts her unorthodox and possibly unhealthy method for losing weight, Kleidman offers encouragement and guidance to those who want to lose weight without compromising health.

Shannon Chamberlain, a writer for Slate who weighed over 300 lbs., posted a personal anecdote of her trials in weight loss. Chamberlain, according to Slate, stated, “[My diet was not] medically supervised or liquid, and perhaps this made it harder than usual. Every morning I ate a packet of raspberries—an officially low-glycemic, low-calorie food—and drank three cups of coffee, because caffeine staves off my appetite.”

Chamberlain goes on to explain, “Then I’d go home at the end of the workday and eat exactly half of my dinner so that my husband wouldn’t realize what I was doing to myself and intervene. I knew that if anyone told me it was a bad idea, I would stop. Eating 800 calories a day and burning up about 400 of them on the treadmill at lunch doesn’t leave you with much will to resist. Brain function slows. Your entire life becomes about a set of numbers on a page.”

Kleidman sympathizes with Chamberlain and her quest to lose weight, but asserts that all weight loss can and should be a healthful process, with the focus on increased wellbeing, not just shedding pounds. “Weight loss is difficult for most of us. However, it is important to remember that any weight loss should be considered just a part of a larger health strategy. If you find yourself fitting into smaller clothes but you’re hurting your body, you’re not doing yourself any good in the long run. That’s the philosophy I espouse in my kettlebells program: exercise as part of a holistic plan for becoming a better you. It’s not about the numbers on a scale; it’s about how you feel.”

Lorna Kleidman is a Three-Time World Champion and World Record holder in kettlebell sport and the most decorated kettlebell athlete in the country.
