If your home cannot conform easily to the 90% efficient furnace installation requirements, you should act now and get a new 80% furnace installed now before the new regulation takes effect.

Chicagoland HVAC contractor, Tempco Heating and Air Conditioning, urges homeowners to educate themselves with the Department of Energy’s 80% furnace mandate. In accordance with The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, signed by former President George W. Bush in December 2007, the Federal Government has allowed the Department of Energy to create regional standards for central air conditioners and furnaces.
Accordingly, a new regulation will be put into place starting May of 2013 in Chicago and it’s surrounding suburbs. With the goal to move the United States towards greater energy efficiency, among other reforms, this new directive will only allow homeowners to install 90%+ AFUE energy efficient furnaces. The object being, to slowly phase out and eventually make furnaces with anything less than a 90% AFUE obsolete in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs.
Despite, all the positives of the new furnaces, there is one problem that can affect some homeowners. 90% furnaces require Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) piping, which may not be the best option in some homes. In townhomes, condominiums, homes with drywall finished ceilings and homes with furnaces not located near an exterior wall or roof access, PVC vent piping is very difficult to install and will require extra construction costs. For those who may have an issue installing PVC vent piping and whose furnaces are around 10+ years old, Tempco Heating and Air Conditioning highly recommends they consider their furnace options for the future. Time is limited, 80% efficient furnaces with standard piping will not be around much longer and now is the time to act.
“This regulation is a positive thing”, noted Gary Doles, owner of Tempco Heating and Air Conditioning. “More energy efficient furnaces are not only better for the environment, they will lower monthly energy bills as well. However, if your home cannot conform easily to the 90% efficient furnace installation requirements, you should act now and get a new 80% furnace installed now before the new regulation takes effect.”
