Hartford, CT (PRWEB) November 19, 2012

Thursday marked the fifteenth annual America Recycles Day, designed to educate and motivate citizens about the importance of recycling. In celebration of this special day, the City of Hartford’s Workplace Green Action Team formally announced an exciting collaboration with ShoeBox Recycling. This moving partnership is the first of its kind in the state of Connecticut and encourages employees to recycle gently used shoes to be reused by those in need of affordable footwear in developing countries. The City of Hartford’s Workplace Green Action Team has recruited all departments to collect used shoes as means of promoting environmental stewardship in the workplace. During yesterday’s event, the City’s Green Action Team publicly recognized the first round of department winners which enthusiastically began this departmental competition early last month. Over fourteen different City departments have already contributed recycled shoes towards ShoeBox Recycling. Over 40 ShoeBox Recycling boxes have been collected to date.

The event and competition allow for a transformative program like ShoeBox Recycling to encourage municipal employees to act on behalf of the environment and help those in need. Besides being publicly recognized at yesterday’s event, all attendees had a chance of winning an incentive gift.

ShoeBox Recycling has flipped the recycling triangle upside down and mastered the most powerful ‘R’ REUSE, with all of the shoes collected destined for reuse by those in need of affordable footwear in third world countries. They have humanized the process by adding the prospect of finding your SoleMate. Recyclers can trace the journey their shoes take to meet their new feet by placing a note inside the recycled shoes.
