Plasma TV technology is somewhat related to the fluorescent light bulb with the display made up of cells. Each cell has a pair of glass panels separated by a gap injected with neon-xenon gas and then sealed within the plasma form. Electric charge is passed through the gas at regular intervals. This strikes the three RGB color phosphors and creates a TV image. A single RGB phosphor group is known as a pixel.
LCD TV uses an entirely different technology to achieve the same level of picture quality. An LCD panel is made from a pair of layers comprising of transparent materials. They are polarized before being glued together. A polymer is coated onto one of these layers for holding the liquid crystals together. Then current passes through these crystals allowing the crystal to pass or block the light for creating the TV images. As LCD crystals do not generate light, it is required to use an external source of light.
LCD panels consume lesser amount of power because there is no need for burning phosphorous for lighting. Relatively the light source used here produces lesser amount of heat compared to a Plasma TV. In addition, LCD technology does not emit any radiation from its screen.
Plasma TV offers a better contrast ratio and renders deeper blacks, also it has better saturation, color accuracy, motion tracking and wider viewing angle. However, an LCD TV is bright and ideal for placing in a dark room that is not lit well. LCD’s are more power efficient as they consume the lower amount of power and do not generate much heat. Therefore, LCD TVs have cooler operating temperatures. There is a lesser amount of screen glare because the screen surface is less reflective.
