Omega XL Reports New Independent Study: Omega-3s Improve Contact Lens Comfort

New research presented at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Optometry demonstrates improved comfort for contact lens wearers taking supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids, such as found in Omega XL.

Australian researchers from the Brien Holden Vision Institute in New South Wales have found that supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids, such as found in Omega XL, significantly improved both morning and evening ocular comfort, with and without contact lenses. The significance of these findings caused the research to be selected as one of the nine most newsworthy presentations at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), the biggest event on the international optometric calendar.

The findings of this research merit such importance because of the potential to benefit a huge section of the contact lens wearing population. As much as 50 percent of the more than 100 million contact lens wearers worldwide report some level of discomfort. Such discomfort causes an estimated 12 percent of contact lens wearers to discontinue using them. The favorable results found using omega-3 supplements could be significant for that population of wearers who stop using them because of the purported discomfort.

According to Dr. Percy Lazon de la Jara, lead researcher and Head of Clinical Research at the Institute, “We found an improvement in ocular clinical signs and ocular comfort and reduction of ocular dryness after oral consumption of omega-3 supplements with and without contact lenses. These results indicate that omega-3 supplements are beneficial in improving ocular comfort and health.” If you wear contact lenses and suffer some form of discomfort, omega-3 supplements could offer relief.
