New design promises improved convenience, shorter waits for patients

Florida Hospital Zephyrhills has broken ground on an expansion of its Emergency Department (ED). The project increases the number of patient rooms and improves the overall flow of patients that visit the department, so they can be seen more quickly. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-December 2012.

Patients that come to the ED or are brought in by EMS with critical or life-threatening conditions, such as chest pain or stroke, are taken directly into an ED exam room so that the triage, testing, diagnosis, and treatment can begin immediately. If necessary, the patient can then be admitted to the Hospital from the ED.

Patients that come to the ED in need of urgent, but not life-threatening medical situations, can be triaged and treated more quickly and efficiently through the newly expanded “Fast Track” area. This area features a dedicated, separate result’s waiting lounge; children’s play area; and comfort seating.

The expansion features more convenient patient drop off and pick up with a better designed drive through area so that patients may be easily dropped off under a covered area, which is a benefit in Florida weather.

Florida Hospital Zephyrhills ED offers 24-hour physician coverage for emergent and urgent specialties including general and thoracic surgery, orthopedics, neurology and neurosurgery, cardiology and internal medicine. In addition, the Chest Pain Center team has the experience and processes in place to stop a heart attack in minutes. Patients do not need to travel far or be helicoptered out of town to receive comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatment. As is the case with heart attacks and strokes, time is a critical element in providing quicker diagnosis and treatment, and ultimately better outcomes for patients and their families.

“As one of the most used Emergency Departments in Pasco County it is imperative that we have room for critical patients that arrive by ambulance and urgent patients that walk-in. We believe that this change will provide tremendous improvement for our patients whether they stay in the hospital or are able to return home,” said Doug Duffield, President and CEO of Florida Hospital Zephyrhills.
