Drug use is highest among people in their late teens and twenties, with the majority of new users being under age 18.
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) November 19, 2012
Talbott Recovery, a leading drug and alcohol addiction treatment center with locations throughout Georgia, is announcing continuing education seminars for licensed professionals, new treatment options and the effort to raise alcoholism awareness in honor of National Alcohol Awareness Week (November 19-25).
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 17.9 million Americans (or 7 percent of the total population) were addicted to alcohol or had problems related to alcohol use in 2010. Drug abuse is another concern for many Americans. The percentage of Americans ages 12 or older who’ve used or abused an illicit drug or medication has increased 8.3 percent since 2010.
Concern is rising in areas related to an abuser’s age, because drug use is highest among people in their late teens and twenties. The majority of drug users begin using the substance during their teen years, with over half of all new users being under age 18. Through addiction recovery programs that target young adults, the difficulty of achieving sobriety can be overcome. These young adult programs use special groups and therapeutic techniques to address the peer-related and environmental challenges young adults often face in this stage of life.
Treatment programs for other areas of addiction are also important, such as prescription drug abuse, alcoholism, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. In fact, Talbott Recovery is one of three organizations in Georgia that offer a Professional Program; a comprehensive treatment program for physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, attorneys, and others who are suffering from addiction and its related medical psychological, psychiatric, spiritual and work-related problems.
The growing prevalence of drug and alcohol abuse also calls for an increase in the effectiveness of treatment options. Through continuing education seminars (CE), professionals such as psychologists, social workers, certified addiction counselors, marriage and family therapists and others can continue building their knowledge in the addiction realm and be better suited to provide quality treatment programs. Talbott Recovery is eagerly working towards the release of its 2013 CE seminar schedule.
During Alcohol Awareness Week, an emphasis is placed on the importance of alcohol addiction treatment options. However, we should place an importance on addiction recovery year-round. If someone you know is suffering from addiction, help them take the first step towards recovery today.
