Craig Faris, blind entrepreneur, has installed an accessible point-of-sale system with the help of Canadian Retail Solutions in his store. The software had to work for his employees at The Quilted Duck Gift Cottage in Nanaimo, British Columbia and meet his needs as a blind person. Canadian Retail Solutions provided the solution with Retail Pro and Faris has been happy with the results. After researching many point-of-sale systems, he found that Retail Pro had the perfect fit of POS and Inventory Management that he was looking for. The last question, and the most important to him, was if the software would be accessible to a blind person.

Faris contacted Canadian Retail Solutions and spoke to their National Sales Manager, Kirsten Wilby-Hynds. He asked her about daily reporting, how easy Retail Pro was to use, and how steep the learning curve would be for the staff. Then he let her know that he was completely blind and needed the software to be fully accessible. Wilby-Hynds downloaded Faris’ favourite screen reading package, Window-Eyes, by GW Micro, tested it with Retail Pro, and called Faris to show him how accurately it was reading the onscreen text.

This and further in-house testing at Canadian Retail Solutions showed that Retail Pro was completely accessible for Faris. Faris then had Canadian Retail Solutions install Retail Pro in The Quilted Duck Gift Cottage and train his staff on the new system.

Coming from a technical background, Faris had high standards for choosing software. He began his entrepreneurial career at the age of 13, putting together an online retail store for the visually impaired. He sold that business in early 2012 and used the funds to purchase The Quilted Duck Gift Cottage in Nanaimo, British Columbia. In 2011, Faris started a non-profit organization, Seeds of Promise, which works with blind, visually impaired, and needy children in Africa. The funds from the store help to generate an income for Faris so he can dedicate his time to the charity.

Seeds of Promise is doing real work in Uganda, where it has run a successful program getting shoes to children who need them with Shillings for Shoes. The organization is aiming to open both a home for children and a primary school in Uganda.

Canadian Retail Solutions is pleased it could provide a solution to meet the needs of an entrepreneur like Faris and looks forward to providing accessible point-of-sale solutions to other Canadian business owners who require software which needs to adapt to them.
