Over 30 million Americans suffer from some form of dental anxiety. Many patients have such intense anxiety of fear that they wait until the pain is unbearable before calling the dentist. Recent innovations in patient treatment options may be changing the way we look at the dentist in East Texas. Smith Dental Care, located in Tyler, Texas, specializes in multiple forms of sedation dentistry, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation and IV sedation.

The first option is laughing gas, or nitrous oxide. It is given to patients to “take the edge off” and is given in the dental chair via a nasal mask. This immediately calms the patient. With nitrous oxide, patients remain completely alert and conscious during treatment, but are very relaxed. After treatment is complete, the mask is removed and the patient returns to normal almost immediately. Most patients that have laughing gas can drive themselves after their appointment is complete.

Some patients may require additional sedation due to severe dental phobia or anxiety. For these patients, pill sedation (oral sedation) may be offered. With pill sedation, patients can take the prescribed medication before coming into the office for treatment. Patients typically feel tired when undergoing oral sedation, and some patients may not even remember their visit after the medication wears off. With this type of sedation, patients must have a driver to and from their appointment.

Extremely phobic patients benefit most from IV sedation. This form of sedation is administered by an onsite licensed anesthesiologist that closely monitors the patient while the dentist performs treatment. IV sedation offers the deepest level of relaxation available. It is amazing for patients that fear the sights, smells and sounds of a dentist visit. “The patient will be almost asleep as the anesthesiologist monitors the patient’s vital signs during the entirety of the appointment, allowing us to accomplish more dentistry in a single setting,” says Dr. Roy Smith. Many patients that undergo sedation have put off going to the dentist for years and years. When they visit Smith Dental Care in Tyler, TX, years worth of work can be complete in a singe visit.
