Through “Mourning Dove”, I was able to explore the many different manifestations of loss: anger, sadness, hopelessness, guilt, fear, and conversely, courage, hope, love and even happiness.

According to Science Daily, children with a parent who dies suddenly is three times more likely to suffer from clinical depression in his or her lifetime.
Through her story about the pain of loss and the journey of recovery, Mourning Dove author Carolyn j Morris tells the story of Billy, a pre-teen boy living and working on his grandparents’ farm after his father dies of a brain aneurysm. Throughout the story, Billy travels through the many stages of grief to eventually arrive at a place of acceptance and stability.
No stranger to the tragic loss of a parent at a young age, Morris delves into the stages of grief through Billy’s story and shows how to overcome it.
“Through “Mourning Dove”, I was able to explore the many different manifestations of loss: anger, sadness, hopelessness, guilt, fear, and conversely, courage, hope, love and even happiness,” says Morris. “Grieving is not just from losing a loved one, it is also perhaps someone losing a job, community/friends when we move, or a relationship through divorce.”
Raised in rural Ontario, Morris also includes the importance of preserving family farm life in her novel. Billy’s daily work on his grandparents’ farm allows him to regain a sense of normalcy during a difficult time in his life.
Wholesome and family-oriented, the story contains the strong message that everything is in God’s perfect timing.
“There is always a plan, even if we do not necessarily see it,” says Morris. “God knows what he’s doing and if we follow His plan, we will be better people in the end.”
Morris hopes that readers use the book as a tool to become stronger while enjoying a heartwarming story. She wants to empower those who have suffered a devastating loss and enable them to move on in a healthy way.
