Accuracy in election results reporting is the first priority for all election officials. The second priority is to report results with speed and efficiency. In early 2012, as Oakland County Michigan began to prepare for the nation’s largest election, the ability to provide election results in a timely and accurate manner was of paramount importance to this large metro county. ES&S proposed a solution that would preserve the integrity of the results while increasing the transparency and accuracy of election night reporting. This solution was the addition of wireless modem technology to the Oakland County voting system. “Oakland County’s precincts lacked the ability to modem from an analog phone line. We were very pleased to learn that ES&S offered a secure cellular solution for the M100 optical scan tabulator. This solution would provide us with the ability to significantly reduce the time from the polls closing to results being posted on our website,” stated Oakland County Election Administrator Joe Rozell.

The wireless solution utilized by Oakland County was tested by a federally accredited Voting System Test Laboratory and subsequently tested and approved by the State of Michigan for a pilot usage in the November Presidential Election. In total over 600 tabulators were upgraded by a team of professionals under the direct supervision of Oakland County. Rozell continued, “Overall, we are extremely pleased with the acquisition, certification, installation and performance of the cellular modems! ES&S met or exceeded our expectations every step of the way.”

The wisdom of the decision made by Oakland County to add wireless modem capability was made evident on election night when over 90% of all precincts had fully reported unofficial vote tallies within two hours of poll closing. “We were pleased to be a partner in identifying tested and proven technology solutions for our customer. Today’s voters expect elections to be conducted in a manner consistent with the evolution and advancements in technology. At ES&S we are proud to be part of a company that believes in innovative solutions designed to complement proven technology,” said Tom Burt, Executive Vice President of ES&S.
