Superbreak, the UK’s leading weekend breaks provider, has revealed findings of a brand new survey, which shows that when it comes to celebrating Christmas, UK shoppers are heading abroad for Christmas presents.
The new survey, commissioned by Superbreak, has revealed that there is a growing trend of UK shoppers choosing to travel abroad to do their Christmas shopping. Almost two thirds (65 per cent) of consumers are put off by UK retailers increasingly drawing out the festive build-up, with 15 per cent of respondents now shopping in Europe.
Of the 1,000 people questioned, more than half stated that European Christmas markets, which in most countries begin at the end of November, provide a true festive atmosphere with 40 per cent citing them as the best place to purchase unique gifts for family and friends.
What's more, a higher proportion of respondents (44 per cent) in the north of England were more likely to have visited a Christmas market versus its southern counterparts (35 per cent). Respondents in Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield in particular were more likely to have previously visited a Christmas market citing the atmosphere being the main reason for visit.
Jane Atkins from Superbreak said: “The overall response to our survey was that the preparation for Christmas in the UK went on for too long and as a result lost some of the magic, a quarter of those questioned even felt the festive period had lost its true meaning. The European markets on the other hand start later, but really capture the spirit of Christmas with special food, drink, entertainment and of course some great shopping.”
“With one in ten of us preferring to dedicate a weekend to Christmas shopping, spending a night away in Europe can be an easy and great value way of getting in the mood and picking up some unique gifts for family and friends.
