The Apple iPad is tough to beat, but Android devices found a quick and easy solution: drop the size of the screen and drop the price. Doing that, Google and Amazon were able to find a quick niche to fill with the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD. In the run up to holiday season it’s difficult to know which to purchase for the ideal Christmas present. Protect your bubble, tablet insurance gurus, offers this look at the two tablets vs Apple’s newest entry, the iPad Mini.
The iPad Mini starts at £269 for the base 16GB model and rises to £429 for the 64GB model for the WiFi version, but those in the market for the mobile broadband version can expect to pay more for the Mini. Prices start at £369 for the 16GB base model and rise to £529 for the 64GB model.
The Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD have 8GB and 16GB respectively as a starter model, and the prices are relatively inexpensive as well. The Nexus 7 starts at £159 and the Fire at £199. Prices rise if additional memory is added; the Nexus 7 goes up to 16GB and the Fire up to 32GB.
PROCESSOR and BATTERY LIFE
Apple has a dual-core Apple A5, running at 1Ghz. The Fire is a Texas Instruments OMAP4 4460, a dual-core running at 1.2GHz. The Nexus 7 has a Tegra 3, a quad-core running at 1.3GHz. Each has a full day batter with the iPad running for 10 hours, the Nexus 7 nine, and the Fire promising an incredible 11 hours of run time.
MEMORY and OPERATING SYSTEM
The Kindle’s memory is still a mystery, but the Apple iPad has 1GB, and the Nexus 7 has 1GB. It is safe to assume, then, the Kindle will likely have 1GB as well. The iPad runs Apple’s standard iOS6 and both the Amazon and Google are running Android 4:1 Jelly Bean. Amazon also has some great customizations, allowing for parental controls that check time and what they do.
Apple’s 7.9inch 1024x768 has the lowest resolution, but can run normal apps without rescale. Both rivals have seven-inch 1280x800 HD with Gorilla Glass, but the edge goes to Amazon with the polarizing filter and anti-glare. The Fire has a Micro-HDMI connector, but Apple would rather users watch Apple TV on AirPlay.
Unfortunately, none of the tablets offer flash storage, so the user is only allowed what comes on the tablet. Since an OS takes up space, figure the Fire actually yields 12.6GB or 26.9GB depending on the size, and iOS6 only uses about 1GB. Cloud space is certainly a viable option, so supplementing capacity is not difficult.
The Nexus 7 and iPad mini have a front-facing 1.2MP camera while the Fire has an “HD” front-facing camera for the same reason. The iPad can record at 1080p video with a 5MP rear camera. The Fire really rocks in speakers, with dual-driver stereo with Dolby Digital Plus. The Nexus 7 and iPad mini have mono speakers.
The iPad really works well on all networks. The Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular versions use dual-band Wi-Fi, and run on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Cellular versions support 4G LTE and 3G standards. Bluetooth 4.0 works well for low-power connections.
Both of the other devices only use Wi-Fi and the Fire has a slight edge. Its dual MIMO Wi-Fi antennae operate in 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. The Nexus 7 uses the 2.4GHz band but has NFC, GPS and accelerometer and magnetometer for apps. The iPad has a compass, gyroscope and accelerometer, with the cellular having assisted GPS.
At 193 x 137 x 10.3 millimeters and 395 grams, the Fire is the heaviest, followed by the Nexus 7 at 198.5 x 120 x 10.45 millimeters and weight of 340 grams. The iPad is 200 millimeters high, 134.7 millimeters wide and 7.2 millimeters deep with a weight of a mere 308 grams.
