This is how we come up with the jackhammer test, I mean how many other guys have worn one while running a jackhammer for hours? Answer, zero.

Three months ago the Heart Rate Watch Company blog asked premier outdoor athlete John Yarington to do a longer test on the Garmin fenix and Suunto Ambit.
"We put absolutely no constraints on DNA man, which is our nickname for Yarington", says Rusty Squire, president of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He chuckles, "This is how we come up with the jackhammer test, I mean how many other guys have worn one while running a jackhammer for hours? Answer, zero." He adds further, "I'll bet you that 99% of the desk riding geeks that test these devices probably couldn't even hang on to a jackhammer for 10 minutes".
WHOSE IT GOING TO BE?
"I know everyone wants to know which watch Yarington likes the best, but you need to read the full blog article at the Heart Rate Watch Company blog to get the answer", says Squire. He adds, "It is best that you read all of John's comments in his own words because it is not some tech feature that leads to his final decision".
In the final analysis there were things about the Suunto Ambit and its fitness features, plus navigation, that Yarington liked better. For the Garmin fenix there were characteristics that were better than Ambit according to Yarington.
"In some respects these watches can be so customizable and evolved that a complete year long test would be better, but its just not practical because firmware and models are constantly being updated", says Squire. He adds, "I've tested fitness and outdoor watches for over 20 years and a three month test is certainly a whole lot better than a couple day once over".
THE PRACTICAL VERSUS TECHNO VIEWPOINT
Most people just want to know what a watch is going to do for them, why one might be better than another and, of course, how to use it. "John just looks at this stuff from a practical, every day, users perspective and not from the geek perspective - he's a real athlete and not Inspector Gadget", says Squire. He adds, "We'll do our best to keep it that way".
Yarington worked out one morning and then ran a jackhammer all day at his construction job. "If you have ever run a jackhammer before you know just how tough that is", says Squire. He adds, "I'll bet 99% of all the guys reviewing these watches don't have the physical strength to run a jackhammer for a half hour and Yarington wore his Garmin fenix inadvertently while doing it for hours - what a great toughness test that was".
