Representatives from Honkamp Krueger & Co., P.C. will be speaking at the New York Chapter of The Institute of Internal Auditors on the topic of construction auditing and the risks organizations should be aware of during large construction projects.

Organizations of all shapes and sizes should have licensed and independent CCAs, CCPs and CFEs complete a thorough review of all construction projects exceeding $5 million.

Ryan J. Hauber, MBA, CFE, CCA, CCP, partner-in-charge of risk advisory services and Matt R. Gardner, CCA, CICA, practice leader construction audit services at Honkamp Krueger & Co., P.C. (HK) will be speaking at the New York Chapter of The Institute of Internal Auditors workshop, Dec. 7, in New York City.

Hauber and Gardner’s presentation, “Construction Auditing and Risks for 2013 and Beyond – What, Why, and How this Will Impact My Organization” will review key risk areas that are vulnerable starting with the planning stages through the closeout of a construction project, along with the items to look for in different types of contracts (e.g., fixed fee, cost plus, etc.) Attendees will learn about a wide variety of construction related risks prevalent in various industry sectors. They will learn how to prepare, and what to look for, in advance of planning construction projects at their organizations.

Preventing construction related aggregate risk is an under-hyped best practice for organizations interested in mitigating legal, safety, environmental, regulatory and/or reputational risk problems. Issues surface when organizations fail to engage licensed Certified Construction Auditors (CCA) and Construction Control Professionals (CCP) to independently review and opine if construction projects at their respective organizations are free of material issues and risks.

Hauber states, “Organizations of all shapes and sizes should have licensed and independent CCAs, CCPs and CFEs complete a thorough review of all construction projects exceeding $5 million. Inherently, this will minimize and mitigate the likelihood and impact of legal, safety, environmental, regulatory, financial and reputational risks which are prevalent in construction projects across the U.S. in our current economy.”

Hauber is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Construction Auditor (CCA) and Construction Control Professional (CCP) with over 15 years of global consulting experience for both public and private sectors. He has extensive experience with regulatory compliance, fraud, forensic, internal controls, investigative engagements, construction auditing and internal audit management. He has been a frequent lecturer for the past 10 years on important industry topics at national and international venues with the National Retail Federation (NRF), Association of Audit Committee Members, Inc. (AACMI), Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA) and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). He has also been featured in national publications including Retail Merchandiser magazine and Smart Business magazine and has served on the board of directors for two private companies located in Michigan and Minnesota.

Gardner is a Certified Construction Auditor (CCA) and Certified Internal Controls Auditor (CICA) with experience in managing a wide variety of private and public companies in the risk advisory suite of services. He has spent the last seven years as a construction audit practice leader primarily focused on leading construction engagements and providing related guidance to clients across several industries, including financial services, colleges and universities, retail, manufacturing, entertainment, health care and transportation. He is a member of The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and National Association of Construction Auditors (NACA).
