London, UK (PRWEB UK) 28 November 2012
Guys and St Thomas’ Charity supports medical innovations in Lambeth and Southwark which have the potential for commercialisation across the UK and more widely.
Dr Michael Wright, Commercial Manager at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity, says, “Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity aims to support innovations in health that will improve clinical care, as well as improve the general wellbeing of patients.”
In 2011 it provided a £50K loan to biotech start-up handSteady Ltd to develop and manufacture a revolutionary new type of drinking cup called “handSteady”.
Unlike anything seen before, handSteady cups are the first cups in history to have rotatable handles. This innovation has unique benefits. The patent pending Rotatable Handle technology enables the cup to stay steady and users to drink without needing to twist their wrist.
The handSteady health innovation helps people with health conditions such as Arthritis, MS, Parkinson’s Disease, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke Rehab and Tremor to quickly make drinking with a cup easy again.
Speaking on handSteady, Dr Wright said, “We are delighted to have supported the development of handSteady, which is such a simple idea that promises to radically improve the quality of life of people living with health conditions.”
CEO of handSteady Chris Peacock is a Physics graduate and started developing new products when working at IBM. He started handSteady when at the Royal College of Art, won awards from Help the Aged and Lord Snowdon. Peacock then developed it in consultation with health experts and patients. Chris Peacock was inspired to develop handSteady by one of his close family members who was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.
Peacock says, “Guys and St Thomas’ Charity are leading the way for health based charities in making commercial investments in health focussed start-ups like handSteady. In difficult economic time such as this, it can be difficult to get the finance needed to develop and manufacture life changing products like handSteady.”
handSteady Ltd is now establishing partnerships with non-profits in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and other nations where it will give 10% of proceeds for people who click through and order handSteady units from the non-profit's websites.
Peacock continues, "Guys and St Thomas' Charity have provided many grants and loans each year, so we were really pleased to be selected to be featured in their Annual Report and on their website. I really value this recognition and I hope it will help raise awareness of the handSteady cups amongst health professionals and patients who need this important product."
