Activu® Corporation, a leading provider of IP-based intelligent visualization and collaboration solutions for mission-critical command and control center environments, recently developed a video case study on Activu’s video wall implementation at the Port of Long Beach’s Command and Control Center.

The Port of Long Beach (POLB) is the second largest seaport in the United States with goods worth $140 billion moving through its gates annually. It is also a trail-blazer in environmental stewardship and in leveraging technology for operational efficiency.

Back in 2005, the Port of Long Beach decided to boost operational efficiency and implement a truly world-class port security model with the vision of including all stakeholders in a software-driven common security-management platform. To do so, POLB needed a platform that seamlessly integrated its diverse technologies, sensory systems and data sources into a common operating picture so staffers could quickly address routine and emergency events. They also needed a video wall solution that would facilitate intelligent visualization and collaboration, in real time, with multiple other agencies within the building (on three different floors) and outside it.

After two years of benchmarking, the Port of Long Beach chose Activu because it was compatible with POLB’s Internet Protocol (IP) based network environment, enabled the aggregation of data from POLB’s 14 different systems and was simple enough to be configured on-the-fly. In addition, with Activu, POLB would get a system that maximizes situational awareness and can easily expand to support new information sources and video displays at minimum cost.

To that end, the Port of Long Beach built a multimillion-dollar state-of-the-art Command and Control Center – a 25,000 square-feet facility that today houses the port’s Security Division and Harbor Patrol and, during emergencies, units from the Long Beach Police Department, Port of Los Angeles, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Marine Exchange. Also in keeping with POLB’s Green Port Policy, the structure incorporated recycled materials, energy efficiency and sustainable construction practices.

Since the Center’s inauguration in February 2009, POLB has benefited from proactive monitoring with visual system alerts that separate signal from noise, and more effective and intelligent response. In addition, IP commonality with Activu has significantly reduced capital outlays on new hardware, allowed quick-and-easy temporary setup for emergencies and enabled real-time information sharing without distance limitations.

And in December 2011, the Port of Long Beach won Government Security News’ award for Most Notable Maritime/Port Security Program. POLB attributed part of ITS overall success to a healthy partner-relationship with Activu and less of a buyer-contractor relationship, as a member of the Port Security team from Port of Long Beach stated in the video case study.
