“Second Screen” iPad App Showcases mPortal’s Building Blocks for Social TV, TV Everywhere, and Second Screen Apps to Enhance Television Watching Experiences

mPortal Inc., a global leader in connected device experiences across mobile, tablet and connected TV platforms, has launched ScreenBee, a companion app that turns traditional television watching into a truly interactive experience and showcases how content providers and service providers can use mPortal’s building blocks to quickly launch an integrated social TV experience to enhance their content. Now available in the Apple App Store, ScreenBee is a “second screen” app that allows iPad users to connect with friends over their favorite shows, enjoy enhanced programming features, and more, while giving content providers a new means of reaching and interacting with audiences.

ScreenBee is built on top of mPortal’s popular SPRINGBOARD Media platform, made up of over 30 building blocks, and takes advantage of a selection of these building blocks designed to enhance programming and build relationships with customers, including:

  •     Discovery – the ability for users to browse current television programs and discover what shows their friends like, as well as search for shows, set shows as favorites and set reminders for specific episodes.
  •     Enhanced Experience – the ability to offer viewers more information about television programs such as show details, episode descriptions, photos, cast information and more. Additional planned features include specialized extras, such as recipes for cooking shows, team/player statistics, polls, voting and trivia.
  •     Interactive Experience – the ability to offer users the chance to interact with others while watching shows through real-time discussions with friends, including integration with Twitter and Facebook.

Subscription TV providers have an opportunity to enhance the user experience and generate new revenue if they seize the opportunity by integrating social elements into their mobile TV apps. Tablets have taken their place in front of the television,” said Sheryl Kingstone, Yankee Group Research Director. “Using tablets in front of the TV is already a common activity, with 16 percent of U.S. consumers and 24 percent of European consumers indicating they already are engaged in the habit. Pay TV operators will use social TV initially as subscriber retention devices. The real monetization opportunity, however, is with advertising and sell-through strategies.”

ScreenBee is also an example of how service providers can effectively engage with consumers based on each individual’s viewing preferences. mPortal provides the ability to collect data and analytics regarding user viewing habits, thereby allowing providers to better target specific content to each viewer, potentially leading to increased ad revenues. The second screen application can also offers a means for providers to manage their brands and alert viewers to additional content that may suit their tastes.
