Creating links and keyword research are only half of the SEO battle. An on-site SEO strategy must be in place for search engine success. “On-Site optimization is the foundation of your SEO strategy,” Steve Jolly said, “It is impossible to build a strong house with a weak foundation.”
Here’s three of the most common repairs to an onsite SEO strategy. Click here to see all 6 SEO fixes!
1. Duplicate Content
Duplicate content is one of the most common ways to get penalized by search engines. A website can have duplicate content issues, even if the content is not scraped from other sites. Archives, Print Only Pages and a lack of Excerpts are some of the ways that duplicate content is unintentionally created.
Use the Yoast SEO plugin for Wordpress to turn off the Author and Date Archives. It is also a good idea to change the setting to nofollow for Tags and Format taxonomies. Use excerpts in every location that an article appears except for the main page of the post. It is also recommended to use software such as SEOMoz or Screaming Frog to verify the entire website.
2. Anchor Text
Many of the recent search engine penalties were caused by improper use of anchor text. It used to be common to continuously use the same anchor text and only link to the home page.
Each anchor text phrase should account for less than one percent of all the anchor text links. If you have one phrase with a high percentage, the best remedy is to build more links with other phrases. These links should reach deep into a website to include every page and post. A great place to check anchor text diversity is AHREFS.com.
3. Ignoring the Alt or Meta
Images and other rich content contain an Alt tag. This tag is used to depict the image when it cannot be viewed. Search engines also use the Alt tag to help rank the page. All posts and pages contain Meta tags. The Meta tag is included in the search engine result to explain the contents of a page. The Meta tag is not used for ranking; however, a great description can create more traffic.
The Alt tag should be completed on every piece of rich content, and include a full description of the image or video. The Meta tag should be completed on every post/page and should contain the keyword. The Meta tag needs to be written to attract people to click on the link to the article.
