The Small Business Challenge Announces Winners

More than 1000 small businesses competed in the SMB Challenge, making a public company pitch and campaigning via social media. Over 30,000 votes were accumulated from the public. The three winners demonstrated great entrepreneurial spirit and job creation ability.

The Small Business Challenge (“SMB Challenge”), a competition made specifically for small businesses looking to expand and create jobs, announced its top three winners on Monday November 26th. The three small businesses that won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places titles will receive $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 in cash and prizes, respectively. The competition ran from September to November 2012, and over 1,000 small businesses participated. Each company made a public pitch on why they should win the SMB Challenge and campaigned for at least 100 votes from the public to qualify for the finals.

These three companies have shown a strong entrepreneurial spirit and from the very beginning, have taken the ideals of the SMB Challenge to the next level,” said Maurice Lopes, founder and CEO of, a sponsor of the contest. "EarlyShares wanted to give Small Businesses the opportunity to earn cash and prizes to take their businesses to the next level. The ability of companies to coordinate their supporters through multiple social media channels to vote for them was key for their success in the competition. Similarly, Equity Based Crowdfunding will require at least as much effort by any small business looking to get to the next level via this new way for businesses to raise money in 2013".    

The top three winners are:

1st place – CharlieDog and Friends, a small business with a great mission. With only 2 employees, this New York based company operates nationwide to create awareness for America's homeless animals. CharlieDog and Friends is excited to use the prize towards expanding its workshop space and hiring more helpers. CharlieDog and Friends operates primarily by selling soft toys based on real-life shelter adoption and rescue animals.

2nd place – Mystery Tackle Box, a subscriber-based fishing lure company based out of Illinois, has introduced a revolutionary concept to fishing aficionados by sending its subscribers monthly fishing equipment right to their front doors. Along with new high quality fishing lures and tackle, members of Mystery Tackle Box have access to informational videos and tips from fishing experts. This small business currently employs only three employees and will use the money to hire more.

3rd place – Array Organics, a startup from Georgia with a green purpose. Little over a year since its opening, Array Organics has successfully launched its line of organic skin care products based off the nutritional value of grapes and toxic free natural ingredients. Their success has lead Array Organics to consider expanding into organic cuisine. What makes Array Organics unique is that all products are infused with some part of a grape whether it is the skin, seeds or oil. Winning this prize will help them launch their line of organic nutrition.

Each company shares an uncanny entrepreneurial drive and commitment to grow its business; epitomizing success stories at the heart of America. Throughout the SMB Challenge, the companies participating symbolized a broad spectrum of small businesses in America. Undoubtedly, their promising stories and desire to flourish is what captivated over 30,000 people to vote.
