The recession has changed the way in which many businesses think and operate and now, more than ever before, manufacturers in the ice cream industry are pushing-up the importance of efficiency when purchasing new equipment, and today it is equally important as price, says ROKK Processing, the award winning manufacturer of high-end ice cream machinery, including a range of mix plants, continuous freezers, fillers and a market leading ice cream fruit feeder, who has received an record volume of queries about the running efficiency of its machines since the start of 2012.

Much like the ‘miles per gallon’ capabilities of a car, the operating efficiency of a new ice cream machine is becoming an ever more important element and could quite easily be the variable that makes the difference between making a sale and watching the client walking away.

Phil Darvell, managing director of ROKK, commented: “Less than ten years ago, when looking to purchase a new car, fuel efficiency may have been a slight consideration, may be even a preference for some, but it was rarely a deal-breaker like it can be today. The same could be said for ice cream manufacturers when buying a new machine just a year ago – they simply had a different set of requirements back then.

“However, today, with rising fossil fuel prices forcing energy rates down the same avenue, and carbon emission awareness at its highest ever, it’s the ‘small things’ that can add up to make a big difference, and efficiency is certainly one of those ‘small things’ that can sway a sale in your favour. It's clearly creeping up the agenda with the pure volume of enquiries we've had relating to efficiency since the beginning of the year”

Efficiency has always been high on ROKK’s agenda and this is reflected in many of its machines.

Phil continued: “As a company, it’s our mission to manufacture and provide machines that offer more than just a premium product and as part of that, efficiency is an important usp (unique selling point) of ours. For example, with our mix plants, there’s an option whereby the ice cream solution can be heated during the pasteurisation cycle by passed it through a plate heat exchanger, substantially reducing the power required to perform the process. The traditional way of heating the mix in the large tanks, not only takes longer, it also uses a lot of power. Over the course of a season, these power savings can add up allowing the business to invest in other areas or, simply save for a rainy day. If the efficiency of every machine in a product line was increased, then the savings just get better and better.”
