Mobile search as grown by over 500% in the past two years, according to an infographic by 34SP.com, while average smartphone usage tripled in 2011.
Mobile search is growing so rapidly that many predict mobile internet will eventually replace the desktop, surpassing it by 2015. In May 2012, 10.11% of website page views came from a handheld mobile device and last year’s mobile data traffic alone was eight times the size of the entire global internet in 2000.
The increase in mobile internet use is partly down to rise and availability of smartphone and tablet devices. In 2012, one in six people intended on buying a mobile tablet, with reasons including keeping up to date with news (40%), internet access (67%), listening to music (48%) and social networking (48%).
