“Not only is Washington, D.C. one of the oldest and most influential wine markets in the U.S., it also happens to be my hometown and a place I consider close to my heart,” said Domaine Founder and President Marc Lazar.

Domaine Wine Storage & Appreciation officially launched their first Washington, D.C location on November 12, 2012. 11,000 square feet of underground space was transformed into a cold, secure wine storage warehouse capable of housing hundreds of thousands of bottles of the finest wines in the world. Located 20 feet below the streets of D.C’s Van Ness neighborhood, Domaine is the area’s first full-service wine storage facility that allows customers access to their collections 365 days a year. This location marks Domaine’s fourth, with existing facilities currently in the New York Metro Area, Chicago and St. Louis, as well as a consolidation hub in Napa.

Domaine opened its doors in Washington, D.C. in October with a soft launch, and already the facility has signed more than 80 clients and has more than 9,300 cases under contract. The drive-in subterranean space has the capability of storing 31,000 cases of wine, or 372,000 bottles. Hidden in plain sight, the facility’s rare combination of high ceilings, impenetrable construction and underground location provides the ideal environment for aging fine wines for decades to come.

“Not only is Washington, D.C. one of the oldest and most influential wine markets in the U.S., it also happens to be my hometown and a place I consider close to my heart,” said Domaine Founder and President Marc Lazar. “I have long awaited an opportunity to return to my roots and bring my passion for all things wine-related to D.C. With the city’s burgeoning economy and an influx of investment, the demand for wine storage and consultation is palpable.”
The team behind Domaine scoured the streets of Washington, D.C. for years, searching for the perfect location. Once found, the team spent another year renovating, remediating and transitioning the once-upon-a-time 1950s Rolls-Royce dealership and underground auto shop into a state-of-the-art wine storage warehouse. An extensive construction process included interior demolition, removal of old electric and gas lines, diamond-bit floor scrubbing and detailed power washing. Once spotless, the space was painted and the installation of new electric, refrigeration, generator and security systems took place.

“Wine shops such as McArthurs, Calvert Woodley and Schneiders have been serving collectors for generations, however, D.C. and its suburban neighbors have never had a proper, full-service wine storage facility” said Lazar. “We’re excited to bring a coveted, previously non-existent service to Washingtonians with the launch of Domaine, servicing a clientele that has long been wanting.”

Domaine clients enjoy a full scope of wine cellar management and wine consulting services, designed to take away the consuming details that come with collecting. The client’s only task is to simply enjoy his or her wine. Domaine recognizes collection access is an important component of customer service, and therefore customers are given the ability to access their collections at Domaine every single day of the year, with a personalized swipe card. During office hours, the warehouse is staffed with at least one wine expert to assist customers. Also during office hours, customers have access to a lounge complete with wireless Internet access, television and other amenities.

Domaine is the only wine storage facility in Washington D.C. that provides the following services:

  • An experienced staff available for inventory, appraisal, barcoding and CellarTracker inventory integration
  • Secure, after-hours access
  • Local delivery to home or office
  • Pickups from local wine shops and consolidation from nationwide vendors
  • Confirmation and inspection of all cases shipped to the wine storage facility
