Barnfield Skills Academy has been awarded an impressive “good” rating following its first full Ofsted inspection.
Ofsted said Barnfield Skills Academy (Studio School) provides “a wealth of opportunities and experiences” for 14 – 18 year old students and has “pioneered an innovative project-based approach to learning that suits the needs and entrepreneurial aspirations of its students”.
Representatives from the education watchdog visited in October to observe lessons and speak to students about their learning experience.
Inspectors praised the Academy for ensuring students make “outstanding progress from their individual starting points”.
And Ofsted were quick to recognise the difference that the unique learning environment has made to students.
The report reads: “The most powerful testaments are provided by former students who speak in glowing terms about how their lives have been changed by their two years at the studio school.”
The inspectors also highlighted the fact that students feel safe in the Academy and that their self-confidence is fostered through experiences of regularly welcoming a range of visitors and employers.
They praised the wrap-around teaching and extra support from staff including weekend revision sessions – a unique provision across the Federation and summer schools.
The success of such a school in the heart of Luton was attributed to “the determined leadership of its Chief Executive (Sir Peter Birkett) in realising its vision”. Inspectors noted that all staff and governors of the Academy strive for constant improvement, both in the quality of teaching and seek every opportunity to enhance students’ learning and experiences.
Ofsted also highlighted the benefits of being part of the Barnfield Federation saying: “The strategic development of the studio school has been remarkable. The clear vision and committed collaboration across the Federation have secured high quality provision for students, many of whom might otherwise have failed to realise their potential.”
Barnfield Chief Executive Pete Birkett said: “I am very proud of what has been achieved by the Barnfield Skills Academy in such a short period of time, the Principal, senior team and staff work tirelessly to ensure the best possible outcomes for every student.
Over the coming months, we will further strengthen our specialist zones in retail, hospitality and airport operations alongside real-world work experience placements.”
