“Our efforts and the kindness of viewers directly make a positive impact on the lives of these children by providing an experience they’ll always remember.” -Sanford Ames, Jr., VP and General Manager of RCN Pennsylvania.
Lehigh Valley, PA (PRWEB) November 30, 2012
RCN, the Lehigh Valley’s preferred cable and Internet provider, will continue its long-standing history of community involvement by producing the 27th Annual Dream Come True Telethon on Monday, December 10th. The event takes place from 6pm-10pm at the Outlets at Sands in Bethlehem, PA and will be broadcast live on RCN TV in the Lehigh Valley and Delaware County.
Dream Come True, the non-profit organization founded in 1984 by local businessman Kostas Kalogeropoulos, fulfills the wishes and dreams of children who are seriously, chronically, or terminally ill within the Greater Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania area. It is an independent local entity. As it receives no federal funding, the tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization has only one part-time paid staff member, the Executive Director, and relies on the time and effort of volunteers for all of the work and other fundraising events they host throughout the year.
For more than 20 years, the digital cable Internet service provider has broadcasted the event, during which viewers can call in to make a tax-deductible contribution or bid on any of the numerous unique items offered as part of the on-air auction.
While RCN continually contributes to other local causes such as the Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley, the Celtic Classic, The Children’s Home of Easton and Via of the Lehigh Valley, the digital cable company is especially proud to be a part of this event.
“We are thrilled to bring this annual telethon into viewers’ homes,” said Sanford Ames, Jr., VP and General Manager of RCN Pennsylvania. “Our efforts and the kindness of viewers directly make a positive impact on the lives of these children by providing an experience they’ll always remember.”
Dream Come True currently fulfills approximately 35 dreams per year and has fulfilled over 1,100 dreams since its inception for children between the ages of 4 and 18. The first dream they fulfilled was in 1984, when they sent a child afflicted with Leukemia to Disney World. The children are referred to the organization by friends, family, clergy, medical professionals, and social workers.
Children can request whatever they wish, but they generally fall into three categories: trips, contact with celebrities, and special gifts such as computers, redecorated bedrooms, or shopping sprees.
In addition to creating memorable experiences, Dream Come True also assists families and children with college scholarships for tuition purposes. It also helps pay for funeral expenses for those whose dreams they have fulfilled.
To make the fundraiser as successful as possible, it will be hosted by RCN’s own on-air personalities Gary Laubach and Scott Barr. The event, broadcast by the Internet, Digital TV, and home phone service provider, will feature interviews with dream recipients and their families, as well as contributing individuals, businesses and organizations discussing their involvement and uplifting experiences. The Telethon also features a lively on-air auction featuring unique items contributed by popular TV networks carried on RCN’s lineup as well as local contributors.
RCN encourages those who would like to contribute to this worthwhile cause to watch via their HD cable service or visit http://www.dreamcometrue.org to learn more about the foundation and ways to donate time or financial assistance.
