Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) November 29, 2012
The California Highway Patrol is reporting a 47.6 percent increase in road deaths from California car accidents this year compared to Thanksgiving weekend last year. According to a Nov. 26 news report in The Alameda Star-News, there were 31 fatal car accidents in California during that period, compared to 21 deaths in 2011. CHP officials say that these tragedies were caused in part by the impact holiday festivities may have on sleep patterns, work schedules and driving routines, the report states.
The article also states that choosing not to buckle up was a factor in some of the fatal holiday crashes. Of the 21 people who died during this time, 13 were not wearing seatbelts. The holidays also had their share of drunk drivers. The report states that officials made 224 DUI arrests during the four-day holiday period compared to 227 last year. It is not clear how many of the fatalities were directly caused by DUI drivers, the article states.
These numbers serve as loud warnings as we head toward the Christmas and New Year holidays, said John Bisnar, founder of the Bisnar | Chase personal injury law firm. "Before taking long road trips, it is important to make sure that your vehicle is in good condition. Check your tires, brakes and windshield wipers before you get on the road."
Bisnar says it is also necessary to get a good night's rest before getting on the roadway. "You may want to make good time, avoid traffic or get to your destination at a certain time. But, nothing is worth risking lives. Fatigued driving or distracted driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving."
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs causes devastating injuries and tragic deaths every holiday season, Bisnar says. "If you have been drinking, please do not drive. Call a cab or designate a drive to take you home. Download apps that can actually dial a taxi for you when you need a ride home."
