Obviously, no single person is responsible for what happens during a disaster. But victims are still legally entitled to compensation, and we can help them get it.

Hospitals across the city were forced to evacuate patients starting Monday as Hurricane Sandy lashed the Atlantic coast reported New York Daily News. Flooded generators, fuel shortages and unreliable communications contributed to evacuation orders at hospitals including Belleview Hospital Center, one of New York's best known.

The evacuations raised concerns among lawyers with Chicago Injury Attorneys, a website that provides free legal advice and helps accident victims find lawyers. Attorneys with the group fear that patients may be mismanaged during the hustle and bustle of the evacuation.

“We know the authorities are doing everything they can to manage this smoothly,” said Karla Bradford, a spokesperson for the group. “But they're operating with minimal resources under difficult conditions, and most hospital evacuations result in someone not getting the medical attention they need.”

Belleview hospital staff said they were working without full light, had to walk up stairs as far as the 17th floor, and had no computers to help locate patients. The hospital ran on generators until evacuations began Wednesday.

Bradford said she believes doctors are doing everything they can, but wants patients to know their rights.

“We've seen a lot of people hurt by disasters who don't know what their options are,” Bradford said. “Obviously, no single person is responsible for what happens during a disaster. But victims are still legally entitled to compensation, and we can help them get it.”

Chicago Injury Attorneys allows users to enter details of their case and locate lawyers with experience working with their kind of injury. All of the lawyers recommended by the site offer consultations free of charge.

“Legal options can seem intimidating, but we're here to make it easier,” Bradford said. “If you were hurt during the storm or an accident in the evacuation, we can help you receive compensation.”
