In addition to running a multi-million business, the GM has to be ‘on’ 24/7 for his guests, associates and the local community. Few jobs are more complex, or more rewarding. This recognition is designed to give credence to this essential role.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 29, 2012
Michael Czarcinski, general manager of the iconic Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites Los Angeles, has been named to the prestigious, inaugural “25 GMs to Watch” list by Hotel Management, a leading hospitality industry publication.
The publication launched the recognition to call attention to the importance of being a good leader and manager in an industry that places a premium on putting a “face” to a complex business involving millions of guests annually. The inaugural recipients were selected from an open nomination process open to all 50,000-plus U.S. hotel GMs.
Czarcinski, a 37-year hotel industry veteran, took over the reins of the Westin Bonaventure in 2007. He recently oversaw a two-year, complete renovation of the property’s 1,354 guestrooms and public spaces. An innovative marketer, Czarcinski launched the hotel industry’s first Twitter campaign that quickly made the property the most visited hotel on the brand’s website. The iconic, reflective-glass hotel has been used in more movies than any other.
Commenting on the $25-million-plus renovation, Czarcinski said, “It’s a little like trying to change a tire on a moving car. Our daily challenges involved the balance between keeping the construction from disturbing guests, exceeding our annual budget goal and improving guest satisfaction. We also wanted to ensure that our associates were well taken care of during what can be a demanding time.” During the renovation, the hotel improved guest satisfaction by 10 percent despite the construction, improved its bottom line by more than 15 percent and increased associate satisfaction by 10 percent. The hotel was recognized by Starwood for a Leader in Sustainability and achieved Green Seal Silver Certification.
Czarcinski began his career as a dishwasher in a family-style New Jersey restaurant and entered the hotel industry working as a Catering Service Manager at the Providence Marriott. He has held increasingly more important positions that led to his operating some of the nation’s most prestigious hotels and resorts. Recently, he was awarded the Manager of the Year by the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International’s Los Angeles chapter.
Hotel Management opened the competition to the entire industry to nominate the top GMs, whether veteran or novice. The winning criteria were based on a GM’s professional background, natural resolve to ongoing challenges and leadership style. Additionally, Hotel Management’s editorial team scoured online customer review sites to gain insights into how the GMs performances were rated by guests.
“The GM is the most important cog in the wheel that makes the hotel industry so unique,” remarked Stephanie Ricca, editor-in-chief, Hotel Management. “In addition to running a multi-million business, the GM has to be ‘on’ 24/7 for his guests, associates and the local community. Few jobs are more complex, or more rewarding. This recognition is designed to give credence to this essential role.”
