Hnida started her kicking career at the age of 14.

When Husted asked Hnida why wanted to pursue a career as a kicker Hnida replied, “Honestly, I literally love the feeling of kicking a football. There is no greater feeling than hitting that sweet spot and sending a ball through the uprights. I also enjoy the unique role that kickers have. The pressure is intense- even on a good day, you only get a few shots a game- and more often than not, your plays impact the game. You are a team player, but your craft is very much your own.”

In his interview, Husted also asks Hnida if people were surprised at her choice to become a kicker.

“At first a lot of people seemed a little unsure or surprised by it,” says Hnida. “When I attended my first meeting about playing in high school, my would-be coach thought I was lost and asked me if I was looking for the girl’s lacrosse meeting. When I said no, I was there for football, the entire room burst into whispers and laughter. But the coach chuckled and said “Well, hey, it is the 90s".”

In the interview, Hnida also talks about some funny situations she encountered along the way.

“The best story is when I got hit for the first time,” says Hnida. “After I had booted through a PAT, a big guy came crashing at me and fell down with me. He ended up directly on top of me. We opened our eyes at the same time and he started screaming “You’re a girl! Oh my God!” Apparently he hadn’t noticed my long blond pony-tail. He jumped up, helped me off and started brushing me off. It was pretty funny.”

Husted also asked Hnida what advice she would have for other girls who would like to follow in her footsteps.

Hnida’s response fits well for someone who was a ‘pioneer’ in her sport.

“I’d give the same advice to anyone who wants to pursue a dream: GO FOR IT. There will always be people who tell you that you can’t do something. But believe. If you listen your heart will always guide you.”
