The Chicago-based energy solutions company, Priority Energy, is proud to announce they have been chosen to provide testing and verification for the U.S. Department of Energy’s “Challenge Home." The home is located in the SchoolStreet development in Libertyville, IL, which has received local, national and international attention. In addition, Priority Energy has been selected to provide a variety of industry leading energy efficiency products such as: Enviro-Dri Weatherproofing, Aeroseal duct sealing, Intellihot water heaters, Lifebreath HRVs and EWC zoning controls. Each of the products was chosen for their ability to meet the DOE Challenge Home’s more stringent requirements based on IECC 2012 and Energy Star 3.0.

"We are big believers in the DOE Challenge concept," says Rob Schildgen, owner of Priority Energy. "The whole point of the program is to identify ways to bring high performance homes to the market in a more cost effective manner. It is easy to build a one-off custom home that is extremely efficient but with results that are expensive to achieve and nearly impossible to replicate cost effectively. The DOE Challenge Home program is the opposite – builders are awarded for identifying innovative construction methods to build more cost effective, highly efficient, comfortable homes."

This is another example of the partnership Priority Energy has created with SchoolStreet Development. The neighborhood is made up of high performance, Energy Star rated homes which Priority Energy has consulted on and verified since construction began. This project represents the developer's continued commitment to energy efficiency, home comfort, health and durability.

A DOE Challenge Home label is the symbol of excellence for new homes. It takes the proven innovation coming out of world-class research at the Department of Energy’s Building America program and integrates their best-practices into its efficiency specifications. As the selected verification company for the project, Priority Energy’s HERS Raters have followed mandated checklists, inspection parameters, and advanced diagnostic test procedures to ensure compliance.

Priority Energy’s High Performance Products in the “Challenge Home”

Enviro-Dri Exterior Moisture and Air Barrier System
The polymer-asphalt spray coating is 97% more effective at blocking air and moisture from leaking into a house then traditionally used exterior housewraps. By creating a seamless barrier against moisture, mold, mildew and air infiltration, Enviro-Dri creates a home that is much more comfortable and energy efficient than comparable homes with healthier indoor air quality and improved durability.

Aeroseal Duct Sealing
Winning a DOE award for one of the “Top 100 Inventions” of the past 23 years, Aeroseal duct sealing will improve the comfort, health and efficiency of any home. Most ductwork, in both new and existing homes, is only about 60-70% efficient. Even if a home has a 90% efficient furnace, with leaky ductwork, it’s likely the actual efficiency is only between 54%-63%. Often found to be the only effective air sealing solution for building code verifications, Aeroseal is a non-destructive, computer-controlled injection of aerosol particles that cling to the holes and leaks forming a tight seal from the inside.

Lifebreath - Heat Return Ventilation Systems (HRVs)
Lifebreath Ventilation products, (HRV/ERVs), remove indoor dust, allergens, chemical contaminants, odors and humidity from indoor air while maintaining indoor air temperatures. State-of- the-art technology increases HVAC efficiency by transferring the temperature of the indoor air to the incoming fresh air which saves energy and lowers heating and cooling costs. Lifebreath Clean Air Furnaces, which work in conjunction with hot water heaters are an excellent furnace option with added health benefits.

Intellihot Tankless Water Heaters
These ultra high efficiency water heaters learn and adapt to a homeowner’s life style and supply never- ending hot water on demand. The units are extremely efficient and built for commercial standards – which enables the water heaters to be used to provide hot water and heat for the home.

EWC - Ultra-Zone Zoning Controls
An Ultra-Zone control system is probably the most cost effective improvement you can make to a home. A homeowner can expect to save hundreds of dollars a year in energy costs while at the same time greatly improving the comfort in the home. The one of a kind UT-3000 Zone Control System provides intelligent control of a communicating HVAC system at a maximum of three zones using motorized dampers and any off-the-shelf 24volt thermostat.
