Westport, CT (PRWEB) November 30, 2012
Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities, Inc. is pleased to present a free program with literacy expert Sheryl Knapp, M.Ed.,A/AOGPE on Thursday, December 6 at the Villa Maria School, Stamford, CT from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Ms. Knapp will discuss research-based reading instruction and how to get the best support for your child with reading difficulties.
“In contrast with oral language development, learning to read is not a natural process,” Ms. Knapp said. “Many children require direct, explicit, systematic instruction in order to become proficient readers, although the level, nature, explicitness, and intensity required may vary considerably. For those students who struggle with reading, it is critical that this instruction is targeted to identify specific areas of strengths and weakness, as identified by carefully designed and interpreted reading evaluations.”
This presentation will explore the components of a comprehensive reading evaluation – including phonological awareness, word identification skills, reading fluency, and comprehension strategies – and their implications for providing each student with effective, individualized reading intervention. Ms. Knapp will also discuss specific instructional programs and methodologies, including suggestions on what to ask for and how to get appropriate support in school.
The parent of a child with special learning needs, Sheryl Knapp is a Norwalk, CT-based reading specialist who provides consultative and therapeutic services for families and school districts across Connecticut. As the founder of the Literacy Learning & Assessment Center of Connecticut – formerly Literacy Advocates – she frequently conducts reading evaluations, provides teacher training and support for especially challenging students, and offers direct tutoring services.
Sheryl Knapp earned her Associate level Certification with the Academy of Orton Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) in 2010. The Orton-Gillingham methodology is a systematic, research-based, multisensory approach to literacy instruction that has been proven to be effective for struggling readers with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. She also has a Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction, specializing in Literacy.
Ms. Knapp serves on the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (ConnBIDA), and is also a contributing writer and editor for Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities.
