World-renowned English guitarist Eric Clapton is considered to be one of the most influential guitarist of all time. He is the only artist to have been inducted thrice into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. In 1992 he joined the Hall of Fame as a member of The Yardbirds and then in 1993 as part of Cream. In 2000, he was inducted as a solo performer. He was also the first British artist to receive six Grammy awards in one night, mostly for his heartrending single “Tears in Heaven”. In the year 2006, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for Cream.
With hits like "Tears in Heaven," "Knocking on Heaven’s Door" and "Wonderful Tonight" constantly playing on the airwaves throughout the years and being featured on movie soundtracks, it is no wonder that he placed second on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time poll. He ranked number four on Gibson’s list of "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time."
Clapton’s career began in 1963 when he joined The Yardbirds, a rock and roll band with blues undertones. He left the band in 1965 when they decided to move into a more pop genre which Clapton opposed.
After a brief stint with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, he joined Cream in 1966 and it was after this that he became well-known in the United States in 1967 as part of the band. Cream’s success was short-lived, however, due to tensions between band members. The group disbanded in 1968 and Clapton collaborated with many other artists after that.
Eric Clapton released his first self-named solo album in 1969, which yielded a hit single in his rendition of J.J. Cale’s “After Midnight." In 1991 after the death of his five year old son, he released his top selling album "Unplugged" which contained his number one hit “Tears in Heaven” dedicated to his son.
Early this month, Clapton announced his major North American tour which will begin on March 14, 2013 and will conclude at his legendary Crossroads Guitar Festival scheduled to be held at Madison Square Garden (MSG) on April 12 and 13, 2012.
