New campaigns seek online donors to crowd-fund needed products for People’s Light & Theatre, the Margaret E. Moul Home, and Plays & Players theatre

“We want to change the conversation about online giving from being one about ‘doing good’ to one about ‘doing better’,”

GiveToBenefit, Inc., a start-up Social Enterprise based in Penn Valley, PA, and dedicated to helping non-profit organizations in the areas of disaster relief, human services, education, and the arts, today announces the launch of its new crowd-funding site,, which is designed to help non-profits achieve their potential with high-quality goods funded by online donors.

Daniel M. Sossaman, II, chief executive officer of GiveToBenefit, says he saw an opportunity to merge his passion for philanthropy and technology in late 2010, after seeing more and more people going online to create fund drives, make donations, and build communities around the desire to “do good” - but he wanted to improve upon the model behind today’s popular crowd-funding sites. “We wanted to change the conversation about online giving from being one about ‘doing good’ to one about ‘doing better’,” he says. “With GiveToBenefit we challenge the notion that non-profits should be satisfied with anything less than receiving high-quality goods, as well as the practice of non-profits having to fend for themselves on current crowd-funding sites.”

The company’s inaugural campaign, which debuted during #GivingTuesday™ (November 27, 2012), showcases a fund drive on behalf of People’s Light, one of Pennsylvania’s largest professional non-profit theatres known for its resident company of artists, eclectic mix of productions, and innovative work with young people. The campaign seeks to raise money for the purchase of an upright piano, valued at $5,500, from Hailun Pianos, the leader in high-quality piano manufacturing across the Far East.

Two other fund drives, running concurrently, plan to raise money for a Watermark® water filtration system for the Margaret E. Moul Home for people with cerebral palsy, in York, PA, and a Hailun piano for the Plays & Players theatre organization of Philadelphia.

“In order to continue to bring high-quality arts programs to our community, we need to continue to find new ways to raise funds for high-quality goods,” said Jane Moss, director of development for People’s Light. “The partnership with GiveToBenefit is a real boon for People’s Light in that it complements our traditional fund-raising efforts while broadening our reach.”

Elevating the role of the supplier of the goods non-profits receive is a unique element of the GiveToBenefit value proposition, and one for which the company has applied for U.S. provisional patent number 61/657,338. By partnering with brands whose products promise to perform better and last longer than typical charitable items, GiveToBenefit believes that everyone wins - suppliers, donors, and non-profits alike.

Basilios Strmec, president of Hailun USA, agrees. “We are eager to show people how special Hailun pianos are, and GiveToBenefit offers Hailun a unique opportunity to delight customers, gain incremental sales, and increase brand exposure for our products.”
