This relationship between exercise and protection against heart injury was quite dramatic. We were surprised at the extent of the association. And we also found that the benefit really starts right away.

The Project for Natural Health Choices Inc. encourages older adults to engage in moderate exercise. According to new research conducted at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and published in the Nov. 14 online issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, even just moderate exercise can greatly reduce the risk of heart attack for seniors.

The research team had conducted a previous study where they were able to establish that certain biomarkers were tied to heart injury that was otherwise undetectable but was associated with a higher risk of death by cardiovascular disease.

In the news study there were 2900 subjects over the age of 65 years old. They were tracked for their biomarkers along with their levels of physical activity.

The researchers concluded that not only did the biomarkers lower as physical activity went up, but that the probability of heart failure went down. They additionally concluded that even moderate amounts of exercise in seniors dramatically lowered the risk of death by heart attack.

According to study lead author Dr. Christopher de Filippi:

"This relationship between exercise and protection against heart injury was quite dramatic. We were surprised at the extent of the association. And we also found that the benefit really starts right away."

If you are an older adult and want to lower your risk of death by heart attack, this study gives a very good reason to consider making at least a moderate exercise regimen part of your lifestyle.
