Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), Tracie Achrem and Chris Borowski, of Women's Excellence in Midwifery are putting evidence-based care into practice at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, MI. Recent research on initiating "Kangaroo Care" immediately after birth has shown increased health benefits for the newborn. Studies demonstrated that when healthy babies were placed skin-to-skin on their mothers, the babies generally adjusted and transitioned easier to life outside the womb. "It makes sense. Kangaroo care keeps the infant warm, they cry less, and breastfeed sooner than newborns who are separated from their mothers", says Tracie Achrem, CNM, at Women's Excellence in Midwifery.

According to Chris Borowski, CNM, at Women's Excellence in Midwifery, "Most women who are interested in a natural childbirth experience and have decided to breastfeed will likely prefer 'kangaroo care' and that is why we felt it was important to incorporate into our care". Newborns who are held skin-to-skin by their mother are exposed to normal bacteria on the mother's skin, which may protect the baby from harmful germs and help prevent illness. When combined, "kangaroo care" and breastfeeding are important factors in the prevention of allergies in the newborn. Contrastly, when a baby is placed in a warmer immediately after birth, the infant's skin and gut are often colonized by bacteria different from the mother’s. Click here for Skin to Skin Research.
