the first 3rd party library to power a new Chrome packaged app ...
pushes the boundaries of web standards to empower developers to build apps never before possible in the confines of a browser.

Waltham, MA (PRWEB) December 03, 2012

Telerik, an end-to-end provider of software application, lifecycle and content management solutions, today announced that the latest version of Google’s Chrome OS will ship with a “Camera App” built by Telerik. The app leverages the capabilities of Google’s Packaged Apps Platform and Kendo UI, a complete front-end framework for HTML and JavaScript developers. In addition to Kendo UI becoming the first 3rd party library to power a new Chrome packaged app, Telerik has published a developer guidance showcasing how to create packaged apps for Chrome and Chrome OS using Kendo UI, along with a “quick start” framework designed to help developers jumpstart the process. The Kendo UI team will highlight elements of the guidance and quick start framework during the webinar “Building Chrome Packaged Apps with Kendo UI” on December 5 at 2:00 p.m. ET.

The Chrome packaged app platform enables developers to create powerful, standalone apps using HTML5, JavaScript and CSS. It pushes the boundaries of web standards to empower developers to build apps never before possible in the confines of a browser. Combined with Kendo UI, rich apps that rival ‘native’ alternatives can quickly be created and run anywhere Chrome and Chrome OS are found.

The Camera app, shipping immediately with Chrome OS, is a full featured photo booth style application that comes with 24 real-time effects including the familiar pinch, bulge and mirror, as well as custom effects and basic face tracking. The app integrates fully with Chrome OS to give users a fast, fun way to take self-shots with their webcam.

“The Camera app on Chrome OS is a great example of what can be achieved with Chrome packaged apps," said Josh Woodward, Product Manager on the Google Chrome team. "It showcases the power of packaged apps to create fast and fun apps for everyone, and it also demonstrates to developers the ability to leverage familiar frameworks, like Kendo UI, to quickly build and publish apps for Chrome and Chrome OS."

Kendo UI is used throughout the Camera App to deliver polished user experiences and robust application architecture. As a framework, Kendo UI is optimized for performance, ensuring the Camera app remains fast and smooth everywhere it is run. By building on Kendo UI, the app demonstrates Chrome packaged app’s support for existing popular JavaScript libraries, and Kendo UI’s ability to be used in complex, modern apps, pushing the boundaries of what was previously thought possible with HTML and JavaScript.

“The release of the Camera App on Chrome OS was quite an achievement,” said Todd Anglin, Vice President, HTML5 Web and Mobile Tools at Telerik. “Packaged apps open a new chapter in what can be achieved with HTML and JavaScript. We’ve worked closely with Google to build an app using Kendo UI that strictly adheres to the platform guidelines. As the first vendor with a completed shipping app, we are paving the way for the developer community to build apps for Chrome and Chrome OS with Kendo UI, while sharing best practices and a framework for additional ease-of-use.”

Telerik and Google will co-host a webinar on December 5 at 2:00pm ET titled, “Building Chrome Packaged Apps with Kendo UI.” Attendees will learn everything necessary to get started building Chrome packaged apps with Kendo UI. Ten lucky attendees will also receive brand new Samsung Chromebooks.
