The Project for Natural Health Choices Inc. recommends consuming 30 g of flaxseed daily as new research findings indicate that flaxseed may be able to dramatically reduce your risk of a stroke and heart attack. The research was conducted at the University Hospital Holguin and presented at the November 5, 2012 American Heart Association 2012 Scientific Sessions.
In the study there were 110 subjects who had been diagnosed with peripheral arterial disease. The majority of the participants were also diagnosed with hypertension and were on antihypertensive drugs.
They gave half the subjects 30g of flaxseed a day in different food sources and the other half ate diets with no flaxseed.
After six months, the researchers found that the flaxseed group had their blood pressure reduced an average of:
•10 mm Hg in their systolic pressure
•7 mm Hg in their diastolic levels
The research team calculated that these drops could translate into a reduction of about 50 percent in cases of stroke, and a 30 percent reduction in heart attack rates.
If interested in lowering risk of stroke or heart attack, consider adding flaxseed into a balanced diet. Flaxseed can be found in foods like flaxseed coated bagels, buns or muffins and can also simply be purchased and added to virtually any food.
