Sebastian Piras' iconic 1993 photo of renowned painter and photographer Richard Prince was selected by Richard Prince to be featured in his new art project, Lemon Fizz, a beverage by AriZona Iced Tea. Mr. Prince not only designed the can but the drink itself .
The company will launch Lemon Fizz, which features Mr. Prince’s artwork in addition to his portrait by Piras, during the 11th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, taking place Dec. 6-9, 2012 at a party hosted by renowned art gallerist Larry Gagosian.
Mr. Prince approached the beverage company with this idea. Mr Prince, a controversial artist famous for his use of appropriation art and art that alludes to the sexual fantasies of the middle-class, with the idea to design the soda. The result is a Pop Art-inspired can that features images from his Nurse and Jokes paintings, as well as a large black and white photograph by Mr. Piras.
Richard Prince, who is known for appropriating photographs taken by other photographers without permission, in this case, approached Mr. Piras for permission to use the image.
The portrait was taken in 1993 at Mr. Prince's Tribeca studio. He was one of many artist photographed by Mr. Piras for his exhibition and book :"Artists Exposed". Other artists included in the series were Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Damian Hirst and Jeff Koons, among others.
"Artists Exposed is an ongoing project," says Mr Piras, "the portraits have been shown worldwide and I add new artists to the project on a regular basis."
Piras is currently in post-production for his short film Fog and also at work on another short film/installation that features a taped conversation between himself and Robert Mapplethorpe.
