A panel discussion slated for 5:30 today at DORMA’s World of Access Design Center in New York City will address the work carried on by American architects in Europe despite challenging economic and political forces and record unemployment there. The program is one of two AIA-accredited continuing-education presentations and other events marking the Design Center’s grand opening through tomorrow.

Rebooting Europe: How Architects are Responding to Difficult Times on the Continent, will examine the role of American and European architects on the continent as economic and political forces change. Panel members are Clifford Pearson, deputy editor, Architectural Record magazine; Dr. Thomas Welter, secretary general, Federal Association of German Architects BDA; David Piscuskas, principal, 1100 ARCHITECT; and Dr. Dietmar Danner, editor-in-chief, AIT Magazine.

The Dec. 4 discussion, Made Here: German Architecture and Design in New York City, will review what it means to be a German designer/architect practicing in New York. Panel members are Matthias Neumann, principal of normaldesign LLC, Brooklyn; Philipp von Dalwig, AIA, principal of MANIFOLD Architecture Studio (MAS); and Juergen Riehm, principal, 1100 ARCHITECT.

Program introduction and opening remarks for Tuesday’s presentation will be delivered at 6 p.m. by Wil VandeWiel, president, DORMA Americas; Dr. Danner; and Dr. Welter. The public is invited to an open house Tuesday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The World of Access Design Center embodies contemporary design, including an 8,500 square foot space built of glass and steel and furnished with classic pieces by Vitra, USM Haller and Knoll. It is equipped with full video capabilities and a database of case studies that make it possible to see and feel how DORMA products will work in actual projects.

The center serves the architectural design community with information, guidance and direct experience on doors, hardware and access technology. It also provides accredited continuing education programs, instructional sessions, product and service introductions, and additional events serving the design community. Visitors benefit from the assistance of staff members who possess deep architectural and design experience.
