Last month, ElderBranch published a list of Top Nursing Homes in the Rochester Area. This list was created based on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) evaluation process.
These CMS ratings are valuable in understanding the performance of a home, but it is important to remember that they provide only a historical perspective. Therefore, these quantitative metrics should serve as one input into the overall decision of where to place a loved one.
Equally important is an understanding of some of the more “qualitative” aspects of care, including a home’s philosophy of care, approach to staffing and effort to keep up with trends. These, in combination with the quantitative metrics and, of course, a visit to the homes, will enable one to create a better understanding of each facility and a forward-looking picture of a home’s quality of care.
ElderBranch endeavored to conduct an interview with each home on its “top homes” list in order to draw out these more qualitative aspects of care. Read more in ElderBranch's report: An In-Depth Look at Top Rochester Area Nursing Homes.
