Following an article about an FDNY fireman being harassed for being a vegetarian, Yumi Media released a s statement regarding the news.

On December 5, 2012, Yumi Media released a statement following a Fox News article regarding an FDNY firefighter being harassed and ostracized for choosing a vegetarian lifestyle.

According to the Fox News article, “A New York City firefighter is reportedly claiming he’s being ostracized by his colleagues because he has become a vegetarian.” The article stated that FDNY fireman Anthony Harper became a vegetarian 2 years ago, and since then refuses to pay his share of the communal meals at his firehouse. “It seemed that every single meal there was a meat dish,” Harper said in the article. “It was always chicken and red meat.”

The article mentioned that Harper was being harassed for his vegetarian choice, and as a result given the most dangerous assignments and threatened with physical punishments.

According to FDNY spokesman Jim Long denied Harpers claims stating that, “The idea that Firefighter Harper has been in any way harassed or bothered because he’s a vegetarian is nonsense. Firehouses across the city have individuals who are vegetarians or who have special diets — i.e., food allergies, etc. — and they are accommodated all the time.”

Yumi Media responded to the news with disappointment in Harpers fellow firefighters. “No matter what your dietary preference may be, these men are all on the same team and all fighting together to keep New York City safe,” says Yumi Media representative Takara Licausi. “Fireman Harper should introduce a meat alternative such as Quorn Foods to his fellow firefighters, and show them that vegetarian options could be delicious and healthy.”
