Saybrook University Introduces Classes Held Entirely on Facebook

“Project X” reinvents the graduate school experience, using “online education” in new ways.

If you take a class in “Project X” here’s what you won’t have to do: buy textbooks, drive to class, or sit through a lecture.

Here’s what you will have to do: conduct a conversation, over Facebook, with a leading scholar about a subject in his field that’s keeping him up at night, and then work with your fellow students to advance our understanding of the issue.
It’s a whole new approach to graduate education – and all you need to participate is an internet connection.

A leader in graduate level distance learning for over 40 years, today Saybrook is taking online education to the next level with “Project X,” an experimental class conducted through social media.

But it’s not just the medium – Facebook – for an accredited graduate school course that’s different. The whole approach is different from other new efforts online learning. Where most online courses emphasize lectures – through text or video – Project X emphasizes discussion and relationship building. Where most online courses focus on teaching students what faculty already know, Project X is about collaboratively pushing the boundaries of knowledge in new directions.

Debuting this January, Project X will start with four courses:

Music, Health and Healing: Notes on the Key to Wellness.

Music may be one of the oldest forms of healthcare and yet we still have little understanding of the nature of music or its healing qualities. This course allows students to use their own experiences and the vast literature on the subject to gain greater understanding of the role music can play in maintaining and restoring health. It’s taught by Eric Wilmarth, PhD, a globally known leader in integrative health care and the past-president of the American Psychological Association’s division on medical hypnosis.

What in the World is Going On?: Evolution and the Meaning of Life.

This course will explore how the theory of evolution affects the meaning each of us gives to life and our place in the universe. It will focus on three issues: (1) different interpretations of evolution, (2) the affect of belief in evolution on one’s view of the world and life’s meaning, and (3) the impact of belief in evolution on a chosen area of interest, e.g., ethics, existential psychology, religion, consciousness and spirituality. It’s taught by Robert Schmit, PhD, a former Jesuit instructor and past-president of the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology.

Effective Therapy and Healing in a Diverse World.

This course examines what makes varied approaches to healing and growth, including psychotherapy and indigenous approaches to healing, effective in achieving diverse outcomes such symptom relief, increased relationship satisfaction, and deeper meaning in life, amongst other possible outcomes. Particular attention is given to diversity, including the role culture plays in determining what methods are the most appropriate and effective in helping people seek their desired outcomes. It’s taught by Louis Hoffman, PhD, President of the American Psychological Associations division on humanistic psychology.

Evolutionary Leadership for Sustainability: From Systems Thinking to Systems Being.

What kind of leadership is required to address the complexity of the interconnected problems of the world? How can I be part of the emergence of a sustainable world? In this course we will come together to share what we know about leadership, sustainability and systems and to explore the ways in which each one of us, as unique human beings, have a responsibility and an opportunity to live a life of integrity while we contribute to the healing of ourselves and our world. It’s taught by Kathia Laszlo, PhD, a Fulbright Scholar and co-founder of Syntony Quest, an international consultant to governments, businesses, and non-profits seeking sustainable solutions to common problems.
