Holiday shoppers are buying more lights and decorations and are trending toward the whimsical for their Christmas and Hanukah festivities this year, according to State Fair Seasons, a New Jersey superstore specializing in indoor and outdoor holiday decorations. The retailer attributes this year’s uptick in decorative purchases to consumers’ eagerness to put super storms and the recession behind them.

“In contrast to the past couple of years, shoppers seem to be emphasizing light and celebration over simplicity and economic choices. We think consumers, especially those in the Northeast who lived through Sandy, feel lucky and want to have a real celebratory and traditional Christmas,” said Michele Tartaglione, director of marketing at State Fair Seasons.

Last year, says Tartaglione, the theme was: less is more. “This year, more is more. Tree trimmings from the topper to the skirt are flying off the shelves (reindeer are not the only things flying this year) along with home decor for windows, walls and ceilings - yes, ceilings. People are making purchases of oversized ornaments to hang from their ceilings,” said Tartaglione.

Families with small children, in particular, trend toward whimsical decorations that include elves, Santas, snowmen and brightly colored decor. Many are also seeking out special artificial Christmas trees, including fiber-optic and pre-lit ones. Those with elegant taste are trending toward decor of gold, silver, crystal, glass, feathers and shiny objects.
