Mexican Insurance Store.com, a top-selling provider of Mexican auto insurance policies, recently kick-started a new holiday driving safety awareness campaign. The popular Mexican insurance provider will be posting reminders and updates about the importance of driving safely during the holidays throughout the month of December. "We obviously want people to drive safely all year long," says Linden Gray, the president of Mexican Insurance Store. "However, we feel that it's especially important to remind people to maintain safe driving habits during the holidays, when there tends to be a lot more people on the road."

Winter is peak family visiting season down in Mexico, so many Americans, Canadians and other travelers head down there during that time of year. As a result, there tends to be an increased number of drivers on Mexican roads throughout the season, which means that the roads are more congested during the holidays too. "Accidents tend to spike when there are more people on the road," says one Mexican Insurance Store employee. "We sell many Mexican Auto Insurance policies during the winter, and we notice an increase in the number of claims that are filed as well."

One tip that the Mexican Insurance provider has for people who plan to drive in Mexico during the holidays is to practice defensive driving tactics. Driving defensively primarily means to never assume that another driver will do the right thing. "For example," says the employee, "travelers shouldn't assume that another driver will stop when he's supposed to. People run stop signs and lights all the time, and they pull out into traffic when it's not safe. By anticipating these kinds of things, it's easier to avoid serious auto accident down in Mexico."

Another key piece of advice about driving safely in Mexico is to use a GPS system. Paper maps can be used as backups, but GPS systems make it easier to deal with detours and other issues. "The first few times I went to Mexico, I relied on paper maps," says one Mexican Insurance Store customer. "Whenever I'd run into a closed road or some other problem, I'd have to pull over and figure out a new route. I was a more distracted driver too, which was definitely unsafe." With a GPS, a driver will have an easier time keeping his attention on the road and avoiding navigational problems.

Mexican Insurance Store plans to keep up the safety campaign throughout the month of December and hopes that people who travel to Mexico will keep the information that they learn in mind. "People want to have fun while they're down in Mexico," says Gray. "That's perfectly understandable. Car accidents aren't fun, though, and there's a lot that people can do to avoid them." In addition to driving defensively, travelers are reminded to never drink and drive. "It's the single easiest way to end up in jail for a long time down in Mexico," says the employee. "We urge all travelers to walk or take a cab instead."
