Judge Martha E. Bellinger retired from the Los Angeles County Superior courts in July 2011. After a short break Judge Bellinger has been mediating, arbitrating and private judging at IVAMS, one of California’s premier Alternative Dispute Resolution firms in California. Judge Bellinger spent 20 years as a superior court bench officer managing heavy calendars in dependency, family law and delinquency. It is this extensive background that has allowed Judge Bellinger to succeed in dispute resolution. Judge Bellinger also brings special skills to same-sex couple controversies, being a member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community (LGBT) herself.“ I believe it would be intellectually challenging and a great service to my community,” she said of the LGBT community. She hopes to ease the path for those who decide to part company, including couples with children and other legal challenges.
Judge Bellinger, a political science major at Syracuse University, Bellinger shifted gears after a course in Buddhism her senior year inspired her to take a closer look at her own faith. That led her to Princeton Theological Seminary, where she pursued a masters of divinity degree in 1974, and then on to Boston University School of Theology, where she received a master of theology degree in 1975.
Judge Bellinger graduated from Whittier College School of Law in 1982 and after two years with an insurance defense firm, joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. In 1991, the judges of Los Angeles County Superior Court elected her a commissioner. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed her a judge in 2005. In 2012, Judge Bellinger completed an extensive post graduate course in negotiation and mediation through Notre Dame University, earning executive certification in negotiation and mediation.
Peter Eggertsen, President of IVAMS says, “Judge Bellinger is conscientious, methodical, prepared and a concerned and compassionate listener to both sides of a family law controversy.” After handling thousands of family law related matters as both a commissioner and Superior Court bench officer, Judge Bellinger is prepared and fully equipped for Alternative Dispute Resolution.
