Blood diamonds still account for 3% of the world diamond production.

In 2006, thanks to an award winning depiction of global conflict-diamond awareness called “Blood Diamond,” consumers are more aware of Canadian diamond. Canadian diamonds have been mined for several years and Seattle Diamonds located in Seattle, WA has just launched a new web page that explains why Canadian Diamonds are leading the industry in conflict-free diamonds. Included in the site is a page of information all about Canadian diamonds including a very well designed infographic lays out the history of diamonds mining in Canada and how they are leading the marketplace. “We want to do our best to educate consumers who don’t yet know and understand why these diamonds are so important. We think the new resources page will do just that,” said Mary Doud, the Marketing Director for Seattle Diamonds.
Diamond rich areas in Canada were discovered in the early 1990’s; by no means are they a new discovery. However, due to the extensive amount of research and construction necessary to properly mine for diamonds, it was nearly 10 years later that the first fully functional diamond mine broke ground and started producing raw gems.
Prior to Canada’s growth in producing diamonds, the leaders in the industry were mostly comprised of third world countries, many stricken with civil wars that were fueled by the production of diamonds. These diamonds were quickly dubbed “conflict diamonds” and consumers everywhere became aware of what may have happened to get that fancy ring from the ground to their finger. Canada however is a first world country. They have an active and respected government, flourishing commerce, and respect for the rules and ethics. It’s because of this that they quickly became the leader in conflict-free diamonds. Although many of the other diamond producing countries have done their best to control blood diamonds, they still account for over 3% of world diamond production. Canada is the 3rd largest producer in the world and of the top 10 is the only 1st world country that has proven through a certification process that every single stone that is mined there is conflict free. There is no second guessing, no smuggling, no wars, just pure conflict-free diamonds pulled from the ground by miners who earn a good living.
“As is any successful business, we are passionate about our industry and our clients” says Doud. “We chose to specialize in Canadian Diamonds because we knew what they meant for the industry as a whole. We also wanted to sell conflict-free diamonds to our clients who are looking for the peace of mind that a Canadian diamond offers.
